Bituca de cigarro em primeiro lugar entre os resíduos do oceano: poluem mais que plástico
Pontas de cigarro poluem mais que canudos e sacolas plásticas. Os dados vêm de um novo relatório da NBC News, segundo o qual, tudo isso acontece porque apesar da lei e da promessa de altas multas, poucos são os que se preocupam com as consequências.
Quantas vezes você já ouviu falar sobre a possibilidade de reciclar filtros de cigarro? Provavelmente pouco ou nunca, pois não há regulamentação precisa sobre o descarte do cigarro.
Enquanto que com os canudos e as sacolinhas plásticas muitos governos e empresas começaram a adotar uma filosofia mais verde e bani-los, com relação às bitucas, tem muita coisa ainda a ser feita.
Uma bituca parece demasiado pequena para poluir tanto?!
De acordo com o novo relatório da NBC News, em primeiro lugar entre os poluentes e resíduos produzidos pelos seres humanos, e que a cada ano acabam indo parar nos mares e oceanos, estão propriamente as bitucas de cigarro. A maioria dos 5,6 trilhões de cigarros produzidos por ano tem um filtro feito de acetato de celulose que leva mais de dez anos para se decompor.
Imagine, portanto, o que acontece nas nossas belas praias onde as pontas de cigarro são enterradas.
De acordo com dados coletados pelo Cigarette Butt Pollution Project cerca de dois terços destes filtros são jogados na rua ou nas praias. Os filtros são não-biodegradáveis e acabam poluindo à enésima potência.
A organização ambientalista Ocean Conservacy que financia a limpeza de praias, revela que em 32 anos, 60 milhões de bitucas foram encontradas e estas poderiam destruir ecossistemas marinhos e a vida aquática em geral poluindo rios, córregos e vias navegáveis.
É impossível saber quantos cigarros foram descartados na natureza, mas muitos restos são encontrados nos estômagos dos pássaros, peixes e tartarugas e são uma das principais causas de morte destes animais. O problema, no entanto, parece não afetar muito os fumantes que continuam adotando um comportamento errado.
Se pouco ou nada pode ser feito para impedir as pessoas de fumarem porque, cada um cuida (ou descuida) de si, com o projeto Cigarette Butt Pollution, fundado pelo professor de Saúde Pública da Universidade Estadual de San Diego, Thomas Novotny, em parceria com um grupo de advogados ambientalistas, busca-se proibir a produção e comercialização destes filtros não-biodegradáveis mas, por enquanto, apenas prevalecem os conflitos de interesses entre os lobbies que se colocam no mercado.
